Entrepreneurship
Experience:
My Entrepreneurship experience is completed by the combination of leading student organizations, holding E-board positions within student organizations, and also competing in the IDEA competition Fall, 2019. I led the Grand Challenge Leaders of Tomorrow interest group spreading awareness of the GCSP program, planning activities, and trying to become a recognized student organization. I also led the Student Veterans Organization, RetrieVets, to become officially recognized as a UMBC student organization. We plan activities, provide support for veterans, clarify stigmas and stereotypes of veterans, and built a network for veterans to reach out to for various needs. Being the service coordinator on the Tau Beta Pi (TBP) E-board has required me to discuss and plan events, participate in them, and document numerous aspects of the honors society. The Grand Challenge Leaders of Tomorrow has been officially established as of April 3rd, 2019 and RetrieVets an official organization as of May 9th, 2019. Additionally, the IDEA competition required research and preparing for. I was not picked as the winner but am thankful to have been selected as a finalist.
My experiences do not connect to my grand challenge of advancing personalized learning. However, the leadership skills and experience making something new can highly contribute to advancing personalized learning if I were to ever start a new company that offers personalized teaching. The IDEA competition provided me with excellent experience in pitching an idea and trying to start a company. My idea was to plant trees on top of roofs to reduce CO2 levels within the city and provide a beautification aspect in city life. The greatest lesson I learned is that managing people is very difficult. While being on the e-board and leading the creation of student organizations, I realized that it is difficult to get people together to agree upon things and work cooperatively with one another. Delegating tasks was also surprisingly difficult. I did not anticipate the amount of control I would have to let go to allow people to effectively complete their work. I thought leading was to tell people how to do things. Instead I found it more to give them direction and allow them to do things on their own.
